Openttd 0.4.8 Release

I'm glad to announce the final release of our 0.4 cycle. For those of you who have been following the release candidates virtually nothing has changed.
For all others the long list of fixes can be read in the changelog. You are highly encouraged to update from 0.4.7 as that version has some network vulnerabilities which can spoil multiplayer fun.

We hope you enjoy this version as much as the previous ones and continue our support. Stats show the frontpage has more than 2 million! hits every month and over 100,000 unique visitors. The previous release, 0.4.7, has been downloaded over 106,000 times just for windows. Who would've thought TTD/OpenTTD is this popular!
As always, the files are in the download section and the forum announcement is here.

New IRC Network

Today we moved to a new IRC Network: OFTC. For a long time we were having minor and some bigger problems with FreeNode. Today we decided that this has been enough (for all kinds of reasons) and followed #debian in their action.

If you want more information about why we moved, feel free to contact either Bjarni or TrueLight. They can explain the reason in great detail.

You can now find us at: irc.oftc.net, in #openttd. We hope you all move with us.

Testers needed -- Updated again

[Update] Today, 19th of August, we merged TGP to the mainline, and you can see it in action in the upcoming nightlies. Bug-reports should now go to bugs.openttd.org, as it is no longer in test-phase. Thank you all for testing and your feedback, you have been a great help!

[Update] Today, 9th of August, we release a new test-release. You can find them at the same URLs as below. Many bugs have been fixed, and many problems are resolved. This should be the final version. So please test it well and let us know any problems.

The last few weeks we have been working hard on a new feature, nicked TGP. Today we release the second (and hopefully final) test-version of this new feature.

In order to make sure the new feature is without bugs, we ask all of you to give it a spin. Download the binary (see below), run it, check the new features, try them a bit, and report back to us what you think of it.

TGP brings the following new features:
  • New optional landscape generator (TerraGenesis Perlin)
  • Load heightmaps (needs either SDL or PNG)
  • Progress dialog while generating worlds (no longer a 'hanging' screen)
  • New dialogs for NewGame, Create Scenario and Play Heightmap
  • Easier to configure your landscape
  • More things to configure (tree-placer, ..)
  • Speedup of world generation
  • New console command 'restart': restart the map EXACTLY as it was when you first started it (needs a game made created with OpenTTD TGP)
  • New console command 'getseed': get the seed of your map and share it with others
  • Many new, world generation related, things
  • Many internal cleanups and rewrites
  • Stats: 555 lines changed, 3609 new lines, 89 new strings
You can download this test-release from [dead link]. Bugs, problems and suggestions you can either post here or email either {mailto:truelight@openttd.org} or {mailto:rubidium@openttd.org}.
If you like to test heightmaps, you can download them via the above link too. Look for OTTD-heightmaps.

Warning: savegames created with this version of OpenTTD are _not_ loadable in other OpenTTD versions!!
Via this way we want to thank the people who helped making this possible: Belugas, DaleStan, KUDr, RichK67, Rubidium, and TrueLight (alphabetic)
Many thanks to those people who helped testing: Arnau, Bjarni, glx, and tokai (alphabetic)

Thank you for testing and we hope to bring more cool new features soon!

OpenTTD 0.4.8-RC2

It seems some unfortunate organizational problems have prevented a swift release of RC2, dragging RC1 for a month instead of the supposed week.
RC1 had a nasty industry problem that prevented goods produced by them to be used. RC2 fixes this, along with a few other minor cornercases. Please test this version extensively, hopefully all is well.

As usual the files can be found in the downloads section and a longer announcement over at the forums.

BitTorrent

From 0.4.8-RC1 on, we will also release all our files via BitTorrent. 0.4.8-RC1 will be our test, to see if everything goes as we want. We like to ask you to use BitTorrent as much as possible. Uploading files to SourceForge is getting harder by the day, and as you might have noticed they had a big outage at the time of the release of 0.4.8-RC1, which gave a bit of a problem. So, to have a backup, and hopefully in the future it will be our primary, file distribution system, we launched BitTorrent. Of course SourceForge will be also available for now. You can find all the torrents here:
